Biographical
Retired District Court Judge Gene T. Porter is a Martindale-Hubbell A.V. rated 31-year legal veteran in the Las Vegas Community. Licensed in 1981, Judge Porter earned a Juris Doctor degree from Pepperdine University School of Law, Malibu, Calif.
Appointed to the Eighth Judicial District Court in Las Vegas in 1995, Judge Porter served until 2003, with two terms as chief judge. He has presided over numerous cases involving criminal matters, including jury trials and bench trials, evidentiary hearings, and extraordinary relief hearings; and cases involving civil matters, including medical malpractice, construction defect, toxic mold, shareholder disputes, trademark infringement, unfair trade practices actions, and other civil actions. Judge Porter has also served in an appellate capacity, as hearing master for appeals originating from Justice Court, and founded the first Business Court in Nevada dealing exclusively with business litigation. Judge Porter has an outstanding record of public service, serving as State Assemblyman for the Nevada State Legislature from 1986 to 1994, including two terms as Assembly Majority Leader.
Active in the Las Vegas community, Judge Porter has provided time and support to numerous charitable causes including Help Them Walk Again Foundation; Mobile Homeowners League of the Silver State; Women’s Democratic Club; Paradise Democratic Club; Assembly Democratic Caucus; Senate Democratic Caucus; Governor’s Inauguration Committee; Clinton/Gore Dinner Committee.
Since leaving the bench in 2003, Mr. Porter has conducted on average over 250 mediations, arbitrations, and mock jury trials per year and expects to exceed that number this year.
